The goal is to support scientific research at UM that is focused on sustainable human-animal relationships that improve the welfare of humans and animals. More specifically, the fund will support research into the role of animals (including domestic animals) in optimising human health. This can include supporting PhD research, stimulating publication and financing student activities and other expenses that, in the opinion of the advisory committee, fit the goal.
The fund’s initiator, Professor Pim Martens, holds the chair in Sustainable Development at Maastricht University and is the director of the Maastricht University Graduate School of Sustainability Science (ICIS). He is a strong proponent of scientific research aimed at creating sustainable human-animal relationships that prioritise both the welfare of animals and the benefits humans derive from them. Thanks to the creation of this fund, third parties can now also support projects with this goal.
For further orientation:
The allocation of financial resources from this fund will be reviewed by a committee of experts consisting of: Prof. Pim Martens (ICIS- Maastricht University), Prof. Chris Thomas (Aberystwyth University, Wales) and Prof. Marie-Jose Enders (Open University, Heerlen).
