The Healing Heart Fund raises funds for scientific cardiovascular research at Maastricht University. In particular, the fund focuses on the pioneering stem cell research of Rogier Veltrop (Department of Biochemistry, research group CARIM School for Cardiovascular Diseases).
In fact, Veltrop, like a few other family members, should have already died by now from a rare heart condition. However, thanks to a donor heart, he is still alive. Out of gratitude for this ‘second life’, Veltrop is working with heart and soul on his mission: a definitive solution for cardiovascular diseases.
He has since succeeded in turning blood cells into stem cells; which he then uses to make heart cells. These new cells can replace broken and diseased parts of the heart. This tackles the core of the problem instead of treating the symptoms. A great innovation! However, much is still unclear and therefore additional research is necessary.
The ambition of the Healing Heart Fund is to set up a sustainable line of research in order to be able to offer the recent innovation, in which patient-specific heart cells can be made from beating blood, to genetic heart failure patients as a therapy.
