The Friends of the Maastricht Academic Heritage Fund aims to draw more attention to the special collections at Maastricht University and to make this academic heritage available for education and research. Moreover it contributes to managing and acquiring the collections and provides access to them for a broad spectrum of interested public, both in the region and elsewhere.
The Maastricht University Library owns a range of special heritage treasures such as the Jesuit collection, the Charles Eyck documentation collection and the Pierre Kemp Library.
The Jesuit collection is the Maastricht University Library’s most important special collection. It includes about 265,000 volumes, mainly in the fields of theology, philosophy, history, literature, law and various social sciences (sociology, psychology, anthropology and economy). In this sense, it is a broad classics collection that provides an important source for research and education activities at the different university faculties. The oldest books date back to the start of the 16th century; the most recent to the 1970s. The collection was purchased by the government in 1973 to serve as the university’s basic collection (then called Rijksuniversiteit Limburg). It came from two former Jesuit colleges (the Canisianum theology faculty in Maastricht and the Berchmanianum philosophy faculty in Nijmegen) and the former Grootseminarie Warmond. In the 1980s, some smaller subsets were added.
A special division of the heritage collections at the Maastricht University Library is the personal collection of the Maastricht poet Pierre Kemp (1886−1967), loaned to the library in 1994 by the Pierre Kemp Foundation.
The Charles Eyck documentation collection contains memorabilia from the Limburg painter Charles Eyck. Maastricht University bought the collection in its entirety from the publicist Wim Aerts, and in the years that followed, added some smaller purchases and gifts.
