On Tuesday evening, 25th April 2023, an interactive production took place, providing an opportunity to engage in discussions about social safety and boundary-crossing behavior. This was one of the projects funded in 2023 by CooSa, the Committee for Supporting Student Activities. CooSa is an initiative of the University Fund Limburg that provides grants to student initiatives contributing to a thriving university community.

In the Learning Spaces of the Faculty of Science and Engineering, transformed into a theatre hall, 150 students and staff gathered to attend the interactive production ‘Safe Space’. This joint initiative of student associations Koko, Circumflex, Independent Maastricht, Amphitryon, Saurus, Maastricht University, and Zuyd University of Applied Sciences, in collaboration with the Time-Out Foundation and Maastricht University, addressed important topics such as sexual misconduct, peer pressure, and racism. It provided a unique opportunity for dialogue.

Dialogue and reflection

With a focus on sensitive topics, the actors and actresses of ‘Safe Space’ brought these themes to life in a compelling manner, fostering an open dialogue between the audience and the performers. After the production, participants could choose from various workshops aimed at increasing awareness and promoting positive change. The event not only offered an educational experience but also provided a safe space for students and staff to share their thoughts and experiences.

“The production, workshops, and conversations contributed to increased awareness of social safety among Maastricht students. It was an educational, sensitive, yet extremely valuable evening.”

More than a production

‘Safe Space’ was more than just a theatre production; it was a powerful statement about the importance of social safety and respect within our academic community. Through art and dialogue, crucial issues were discussed, fostering a culture of inclusivity and respect.
