UM Dinner 2024: An evening of collaboration and innovation

The University Fund Limburg proudly hosted the UM Dinner 2024 on 17th April 2024, an exclusive event that brings together renowned regional companies, esteemed professors, and distinguished external guests. Held at the Provinciehuis Limburg, the evening served as a platform for over 190 participants to forge connections and strengthen bonds within the university community and beyond.

Now in its 16th year, the UM Dinner continues to symbolize collaboration and innovation, embodying the partnership between Maastricht University (UM), the University Fund Limburg, and the broader community. This year’s event focused on promoting impactful research and fostering valuable collaborations.

Spotlight on promising research

One of the highlights of the evening was the spotlight on three research projects presented by distinguished researchers from Maastricht University:

• Nicole Geschwind and Marjolein Hanssen: Their collaborative pitch explored the intersection of Environmental Psychology and Climate Change, offering fresh insights into understanding human behaviour in the face of environmental challenges.
• Kamil Bujnarowski: Delving into the realm of robotics and sustainability, Kamil’s presentation on CoRoSect illuminated the potential of insect farming through innovative automation technologies.
• Mariëlle Wijermars: With a focus on European politics and media, Mariëlle shed light on the evolving landscape of political censorship and disinformation, particularly in the context of Russian influence.

Honouring excellence: Young Talent and Innovation Award

Throughout the evening, all dinner guests had the opportunity to vote for the research project they deemed most valuable. The recipient of this vote would be honoured with the Young Talent and Innovation Award, along with a significant financial boost of €10.000 to advance their research. This year, Mariëlle Wijermars was awarded this prestigious prize. We extend our warmest congratulations to her on this achievement and wish her continued success in her research on the evolving landscape of political censorship and disinformation.

In addition to Mariëlle, we also want to congratulate Kamil and Nicole and Marjolein for their contributions. These runners-up did not leave empty-handed; they received a commendable incentive amount to further support their research projects.

In addition to the captivating presentations, the UM Dinner served as a catalyst for forging new connections and collaborations. By bringing together academia, industry, and government stakeholders, the event facilitated invaluable networking opportunities, laying the groundwork for future partnerships and initiatives.
